Fairfield’s Egan School & Kanarek Center to Tell Us More: An Advance Care Planning Workshop

On Wednesday, November 13, 2019 from 5:30-7:00pm, the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies and the Kanarek Center for Palliative Care Nursing Educationwill host an education forum, Tell Us More: An Advance Care Planning Workshop with featured speaker: Donna Coletti, MD, Scholar-in-Residence Palliative Care.

The workshop addresses questions surrounding an advance directive (“living will” and more), in which individuals can write their goals for medical care in the event they are seriously ill and can’t speak for themselves. Experts say only about 20-30% of Americans have completed an advance directive even though all people age 18 and older are encouraged to have one.

Clinical providers recognize that it is understandable why people would put off discussing the topic of serious illness and death, but also that it’s essential to have this family conversation in advance. It is believed to be an ongoing discussion that should start in the living room, not in the hospital waiting room when it may be too late.

The event will feature a keynote address from Dr. Coletti and other experts in the field of palliative care as well as roundtable discussions on legal issues, spiritual care, and advance directive writing with Richard Newman, JD, Karen Shields Wright MS, DC, DM, and Laura Taets, MSW. Please join us, and encourage student attendance!
