On August 2nd, the DOJ and FTC sued TikTok for violating COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) by allowing children under 13 to create accounts and collect their data without parental consent. FTC Chair Lina Khan highlighted the risk to millions of children’s safety.
TikTok denied the allegations, claiming they are outdated and citing efforts to protect children, including age-appropriate experiences and privacy features. This followed a 2019 $5.7 million fine for similar issues.
