Common Faculty Questions about Barnes and Noble's Red Stack Direct Program and Textbook Submissions

As we begin our first semester using Barnes and Noble’s Red Stack Direct program, we wanted to share the information below that clarifies some of the most common faculty questions we have received recently.

Thank you,

Jay Rozgonyi

Debbie Whalley

TEXTBOOK VISIBILITY WITHIN THE BNC COURSE MATERIALS LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability)

The BNC Course Materials link within Blackboard does not provide any information on physical items. While the BNC link is added to all courses, materials are ONLY visible if they are being delivered digitally.

THEN HOW WILL STUDENTS SEE ALL OF THEIR REQUIRED MATERIALS?

This can happen in several ways:

  1. Going forward, students can always see their required (and recommended) materials in the Red Stack Direct portal. All students will have the opportunity to see this because they are auto enrolled into the program each semester.
  2. The students can check the bookstore website using their student information (OR searching by TERM/DEPT/COURSE/SEC).

These will correspond to what has been faculty have submitted in the Barnes and Noble portal and will generally update within 24-48 hours of the adoption being placed (or changed)

HOW TO ADOPT MATERIALS IN THE BARNES AND NOBLE PORTAL

The portal lets you log in with your Fairfield University NetID via a link in Blackboard. You can also access the portal through the link in your Adoption Reminder emails.

As faculty, you will land on the Course List and see all your courses for the term/semester, as recorded in Banner. Here, you can submit your adoptions by using your adoption history, searching the catalog, and more.

MOST IMPORTANT: To Re-Adopt from a past term, use the One Click Re-Adopt function. Don’t forget to select which term/section you want to use when doing this!

TIMELINE FOR PROCESSING DIGITAL ITEMS

We strive to have all items ready for the first day of class. Once adopted, the material in question is added to our tracker document and sent to our BNC team to be paired in VitalSource, the provider of our ebooks. Ideally this will happen within 48 hours. However, the timeline will vary as the semester draws closer.

Any questions regarding this should be directed to the bookstore at sm8505@bncollege.com or (203) 254-4262 ext. # 3084.

HOW WILL RED STACK STUDENTS KNOW TO ACCESS THEIR DIGITAL ITEMS

On the first day of class, all students are set to receive a welcome email regarding their Red Stack Direct materials. This email will list their courses, the digital items that are in them, and any specific instructions related to them.

Below are some items that will be useful for instructors to know regarding student access:

  • For Access Codes: These codes will be deployed in Blackboard via a link that says, "Reveal Access Code". Students then use the codes as they normally would on the publisher website
  • For eBooks: There will be a button in Blackboard that allows students to “activate” the book. This will make the item appear in the student’s YUZU library (which is where they will access the item).

MY BNC BLACKBOARD IS SHOWING “NO COURSE MATERIALS”

Course materials are not available through the BNC Course Materials link until the first day of classes. If you are not seeing the BNC Course Materials link in your course, you can add it by going to the Content Marketplace. Contact academiccomputing@fairfield.edu if you need assistance with Blackboard.

*If this was a RECENT digital addition to your course, it may not be set up with VitalSource yet

WHO TO CONTACT FOR DIFFERENT PROBLEMS

  • Questions about course materials, access to either the Red Stack Direct student portal or the opt-out tool, and the Barnes & Noble LTI in Blackboard should come to the bookstore.
  • Questions about a publisher LTI in Blackboard (needed to use the courseware product we are providing access to in our LTI, for example Pearson MyLab, Cengage MindTap, etc.) or using courseware to manage the course should be directed to the publisher representative working with the faculty. For assistance with integrating LTIs into your Blackboard course, email academiccomputing@fairfield.edu.
