CARE Team
The CARE Team meets on a recurring basis to review behavioral concerns of a non-emergency nature that are referred to it by members of the University community. The Team works to achieve coordinated and appropriate responses to address student behavior. Examples of student behaviors that should be referred to this group include, but are not limited to:
- inappropriate, worrisome, or disturbing comments
- lack of engagement (e.g., frequently absent from class, social isolation)
- physical, mental, and spiritual health concerns
- death of a family member or close friend
- suspected or known substance abuse
- changes in behavior
- aggression
The CARE Team is comprised of two essential groups – a core team and a full team. Select representatives from both Student Life and Academic Affairs serve on the core team. It includes individuals from the Academic Representation team, the Dean of Students staff, Health and Wellness, and Residence Life. The full team is made up of campus partners from academic dean’s offices, Accessibility, Athletics, Campus Ministry, Counseling & Psychological Services, Public Safety, and the Student Health Center. The Team is chaired by Associate Vice President & Dean of Students Will Johnson, PhD and coordinated by Assistant Dean of Students Clinesha Johnson, PsyD. To report a concern about a student to the Case Management Committee, please submit a Student of Concern report or contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 203-254-4211.
The CARE Team does not address emergencies or instances where an immediate threat requires a timely response (e.g., endorsements of self-harm or harm to others). In cases of emergencies or immediate threat, please notify Public Safety at 203-254-4090. The CARE Team is one of many University efforts aimed at supporting a safe and responsive environment for students to thrive personally and academically. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of the Dean of Students.
