Donald Trump is old; Joe Biden too, and was older-seeming, which changed the history of the republic. The Senate, which is actually named in honor of old men, is populated by more senescent (and sometimes senile) politicians than ever. How did we get here? What is old and what is new in American gerontocracy? What are its current sources, and is there an answer to it (if it's a problem)?
Dr. Moyn is a fellow of the new Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. Over the years he has written in venues such as The Atlantic, Boston Review, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Commonweal, Dissent, the Guardian, the London Review of Books, The Nation, The New Republic, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.
