Understanding the F-1 Visa and Enrollment Requirements
As our international degree-seeking students prepare for the upcoming semester, it’s essential for them to comply with the F-1 visa regulations that govern their academic journey. The more we all understand these regulations, the better we can help them.
What is an F-1 Visa?
The F-1 visa is a non-immigrant student visa that allows students to pursue a degree at an accredited institution in the United States. To maintain F-1 status, there are specific requirements regarding course enrollment each semester.
Course Load Requirements
- Undergraduate Students: Must enroll in at least 12 credit hours per semester.
- Graduate Students: Must enroll in at least 9 credit hours per semester.
Additionally, students are only allowed to take a maximum of 1 course or 3 credit hours in an online or hybrid modality as part of their total credit load. This ensures compliance with F-1 visa regulations while providing some flexibility in their course schedules.
Understanding and adhering to these requirements is crucial for maintaining F-1 visa status and making steady progress toward their degrees.
