Free Student Arts Excursion: Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Fairfield University Arts Institute is pleased to offer students a fully funded arts excursion to New York City and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This is trip is limited to twelves students, and the cost of travel, lunch and art supplies will be covered.
With Associate Professor Suzanne Chamllin as curator and host, students will tour and draw in the 19th century European Painting Galleries.
This will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2025. Twelve student slots are available, please email Kerry Lunn to reserve your spot:

8:51 am --Train from Fairfield Station arrives Grand Central Terminal
10:15 am –Meet Prof. Chamlin at the Main Information Booth inside of Grand Central Terminal, we will take the subway together
11:00 am -- We arrive at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 82nd Street and Fifth Avenue, Main Entrance
11:15am –12:30pm 19th Century European Paintings Galleries
12:30pm –1:00pm Lunch at the Met’s Cafeteria
1:15pm – 2:45 pm European Paintings, 19th Century Galleries
4:02 pm --We take the return train from Grand Central Station
5:30 pm – Arrive at Fairfield Train Station

A note from Professor Chamlin:
Students will meet me at Grand Central Terminal at the main information booth and take the subway together arriving at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 11:00am. After checking in, from 11:15-12:30pm we’ll focus on learning to look by examining landscape paintings in the 19th Century European Painting Galleries, we’ll look at landscape paintings by Cèzanne, Corot, Courbet, Boudin, Pissarro and Van Gogh. From 12:30pm -1:00pm we’ll have lunch at the Met’s Cafeteria. In the afternoon, 1:15-2:45 p.m. there will be a short introductory drawing demonstration and lesson on sketching the shapes within the paintings as a way to deepen our understanding for the motifs and compositions of a few paintings that you select. Small sketchbooks and pencil will be provided and you will have time to sketch, or reflect in writing about what you see. No prior art or drawing experience is required. We’ll ride the 4 or 6 train together to Grand Central and take the 4:02pm train back together arriving at the Fairfield train station at 5:30pm.
Prior to the excursion we meet on zoom for instructions for the excursion on Thursday, September 25, 7:00-8:00pm or Friday, September 26, 9am-10am. If one of these times would not work for you, please email Suzanne Chamlin at schamlin@fairfield.edu to set up a different time.
