Douglass Day Transcribe-a-Thon 2/13
Date: 02-13-2026
Time: 12:00 PM
Location: DiMenna-Nyselius Library, CAS Innovation Lab
For this year’s Douglass Day celebration, to be held Friday, February 13th from 12pm-3pm at the DiMenna-Nyselius Library, we will host a crowdsourcing transcription project featuring the records of the Colored Conventions movement. These records include materials ranging from 1830 through the turn of the 20th century and show the role of Black communities in organizing and agitating across the century.
We are planning for lunch, music, and a good time! Stay the whole time or drop-in. Please bring your own laptop or device. No experience is necessary! Please register here: https://libcal.fairfield.edu/event/15841250
What is a transcribe-a-thon?
Our main activity will be transcribing the works in all sorts of documents (from letters and diaries to certificates and postcards). Don't feel comfortable reading old handwrirting? You can work in pairs! There are also many typewritten documents that are easier to read. And we have lots of tutorials, guides, and more to share. By transcribing these records, we make them more accessible and help to highlight the ways the Colored Conventions worked to pass and protect 14th Amendment Rights. You can preview the digital records here: https://omeka.coloredconventions.org/.
This event is organized by the DiMenna-Nyselius Library and is part of Fairfield University's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.
