Faculty Workshop: Building Inclusive Dialogue and Practice

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging in collaboration with the Office of Accessibility and the Center for Academic Excellence is hosting a series of monthly professional development sessions designed to strengthen inclusive leadership, dialogue, and equity-centered practice. Each session invites reflection, skill-building, and actionable strategies to enhance our shared culture of belonging at Fairfield University. This is the fourth session led by Vernée Butterfield, PhD and will be joined by Christine Dalton, Director of Office of Accessibility.  

Lunch & Learn Series, Building Inclusive Dialogue and Practice:

Topic - Accessibility and Inclusion: Advancing Disability Equity In Our Work

How do we move beyond accommodation toward environments where individuals with disabilities experience belonging, dignity, and full participation? This interactive session invites faculty  to deepen their understanding of disability as a dimension of identity and to examine how everyday practices, assumptions, and institutional norms shape access and inclusion across learning and work environments. Grounded in our shared commitment to cura personalis, participants will explore how intentional practices can reduce barriers and create more responsive, inclusive spaces for all.

Participants will learn to:

• Recognize disability as a dimension of identity and understand its impact on belonging and participation
• Reflect on how institutional norms and practices may unintentionally exclude or marginalize individuals with disabilities
• Respond more intentionally to the needs, experiences, and strengths of those in front of them
• Use inclusive communication and flexible practices to support diverse learners and colleagues
• Apply accessibility strategies, including elements of universal design, to reduce barriers and expand participation
