Faculty Research Spotlight: Dr. Annemarie Iddins
“Ephemeral Infrastructures: Archiving and Access in Digital Media”
Fairfield University’s Department of Communication is hosting its third annual Faculty Research Spotlight on Wednesday, April 29 at 4:00 pm. This is an exciting and unique opportunity for the campus community to learn about research by one of Fairfield’s own, Dr. Annemarie Iddins. Dr. Iddins is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Fairfield University. She is a critical media scholar working at the intersection of global communication and media industries, with a particular focus on independent media and political culture. Her work has been published in Media, Culture & Society, the International Journal of Communication, the International Journal of Cultural Studies, and Communication, Culture & Critique.
Dr. Iddins has been selected to discuss her research topic titled, “Ephemeral Infrastructures: Archiving and Access in Digital Media.” This work seeks to understand what happens to digital-native independent media over time and how the ephemerality of various infrastructural layers underlying these media affect the accessibility of alternative discourses in society. In doing so, it examines how digital technologies and cultures build on and transform independent media in Morocco, focusing on the activist blogging collective Mamfakinch. Through political economy and discourse analysis, Dr. Iddins examines the challenges of archiving Mamfakinch, what those challenges indicate about the accessibility of first-generation digital media, and the emergence of an increasingly ambivalent politics of connectivity.
Appetizers and refreshments will be served. Hope you can join us!
