United Nations Security Council Crisis Simulation:  Protection of Civilians (PO 2471/INST 2471)


ONLINE! May 20 – June 3  * 3 CREDITS


 REGISTRATION DEADLINE May 18th  


Through your role representing the unique historical, geo-political and cultural perspectives of one of the Security Council’s member states, you will simulate diplomacy on Protection of Civilians (POC). The course provides training on a range of diplomatic practices, including drafting resolutions, presidential statements or diplomatic notes. Simulating the Council’s annual review of POC which runs parallel to the course, you will encounter in real time the power disparities between global North and South; divergence of views and global tensions on the stark realities facing civilians and humanitarian action in war zones and conflicts; and challenges of working in coalitions (such as the “the Group of Friends on POC”) or carrying out the duties of the “penholder” responsible for initiating draft texts.  


The class will meet through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students will also participate in briefings from high-level United Nations and international non-profits, such as:  

 Former Chief of the UN Security, UN Political Affairs Officer 

 Senior Policy Advisor, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

 Senior Director, Humanitarian Operations, Save the Children 

 Deputy Head of Delegation, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) 

 Instructor: Dr. Janie Leatherman, Director of Humanitarian Action; Professor of Politics,   International Studies
