Leonard Downie, Jr., Weill Family Professor of Journalism at the Cronkite School and long standing and award winning executive director of the Washington Post, will speak about the role of news in our democracy.  His remarks will address the promise and pitfalls of news during the Trump administration and its predecessors, the rights and responsibilities of journalists, the role of the government, and challenging conceptions of who and what journalism is for.  He will address these concerns in the context of such pressing matters as the highly polarized contemporary political environment, the global pandemic, racial reckonings, and the collapse of local journalism in the United States.

Co-sponsored by the project team (Drs. Adair, Brunn-Bevel, Leatherman, Rusu and Xie) of the Davis Educational Foundation grant, "Civic Education through the Promise of Democracy", The Department of Politics, the Department of Communication, the Department of English, the Master's in Public Administration Program and the Center for Social Impact
