A look at four Russian musical works (three operas and one film score), focusing on how art and nationalism interact, especially in these works with a pro-Russian aspect present in their storytelling. The discussion will span the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including Mikhail Glinka’s A life for the Tsar, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s little-known Oprichnick, Modest Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, and Sergei Prokofiev’s vocal film score to Alexander Nevsky, directed by Sergei Eisenstein. The presentation will include examples from film and music, both recorded and live, as well as a question-and-answer period.

Michael A. Ciavaglia, DMA, has served on the music staffs of the Cincinnati Opera, Asheville Lyric Opera, and New York’s On Site Opera, the New York Choral Society, and the Connecticut Chamber Choir, where he has prepared and conducted a range of works from the classics to world premieres. At Fairfield, Dr. Ciavaglia has taught on the faculty of the Visual and Performing Arts department since 2006, teaching music history in the classroom and voice in the studio; has served as guest conductor of the Fairfield University Glee Club for performances at home and abroad; and will debut as music director for Theatre Fairfield’s upcoming production of [title of show].
