The waltz is usually seen as the most important popular style of 19th-century Europe. After Richard Strauss wrote Der Rosenkavalier in 1911, it seemed that the dance was whisked off the stage for good. But the feeling of the waltz lived on in the United States, with occasional lovely waltzes by our popular composers, particularly Richard Rodgers, whose waltzes are perhaps the last great expression of the triple-time dance. This presentation includes performances of waltzes by Zez Confrey, George Gershwin, and Richard Rodgers, including his brilliant waltzes from Carousel in a special piano arrangement.
