Sabine Nikolay
"From Vienna to Woodstock: A European Look at Rock Culture Myths & History"

Live from Vienna, Austria

Join us for a fascinating live broadcast with one of Austria's leading public radio personalities. Celebrating the upcoming publication of her new book, Playground of the Millionaires: Woodstock Revisited, Sabine Nikolay presents a lively time capsule road trip and transatlantic cultural adventure. Living in the shadows of Vienna's history of opera and classical music, Nikolay shares her unique cultural odyssey.

In 1977, an 11-year-old girl living in a small Austrian town got a yellow cassette tape as a present. The handwritten sleeve said: Janis Joplin, Woodstock 1969. The girl didn't know what Woodstock was, nor did she know anything about Janis Joplin. So, she played the tape and – wow – within seconds her life changed. Janis' voice, strength, and power moved something in her. Many years later, in 2009, the girl had grown up to become a radio journalist, and set out to explore the myths of Woodstock: peace, love, and free music.

She traveled the U.S., meeting producers, backstage staff, talent, and people who were in the audience, and put together a completely different picture of the mystical event of August 1969. The "Road Trip Book" combines impressions of America in the 60s and corporate America during its biggest economic crisis in the 2000s.
