Kick off the fall semester "write"! Join the CAE and a community of colleagues for a day-long retreat on Monday, August 26th, 10 am - 3 pm, in Library 107C. Plan, begin, revise, or complete writing projects (e.g., manuscripts, books, reports, portfolios/dossiers). Consult with peers or CAE staff about any stage of your writing process, or use the time for some solo writing. Bring your writing materials and tools.

Introduction to Blackboard

Even if you’ve been using Blackboard for years, it’s a good bet that you have at least a few questions or frustrations that we may be able to help you with. This session will attempt to address as many of those issues as possible, as well as introduce you to Blackboard’s optional new course interface, called Blackboard Ultra. Led by Academic Computing staff members, Mary Kleps and Heather Flinn, this session will address the tools of most interest to you – including the Gradebook, streaming video, and the new Blackboard Instructor iPad & mobile apps. BYO Laptop so you the experts can help you try out all the new features!
Core Signature Elements Clinic

Do you have an existing course that you think meets the learning objectives for one or more of the Signature Elements of the Core? Come to a 2-hour clinic to get your submission in before classes begin. The clinic will include an introductory discussion about the submission forms, sample syllabi from recently approved courses, and brainstorming sessions about class assignments tailored to the WAC/WID, SJ, and ID outcomes. Faculty will have time to complete their work in a focused space in the library. Members of the Signature Element subcommittees and a representative from CAE will be available for individual consultations as well. Lunch will be provided from 12-1.
Pushing Your iPad’s Teaching Potential

At Fairfield, all full-time faculty members are given an iPad and all part-time instructors can request an iPad loan any semester in which they’re teaching. In this hands-on workshop, the CAE will provide an overview of some simple-to-use but highly effective tools to bring modern technology in your classrooms. In addition to featuring the all-new Blackboard Instructor app, the session will showcase tools to foster student communication outside of class; build multimedia ebooks; capture virtual whiteboard drawing and narration in the form of a video; and mark up PDFs with highlights, comments, notes, and even audio clips. Stop by to explore these great apps and see which ones might help introduce some new elements to your teaching.

Technology is always moving forward and even if you think you know the latest apps, you may be missing out of some of their newer features that could really help you in the classroom. In this session, we’ll take a look at a number of tools that many of our faculty have already been using, but which have recently acquired valuable new features that may help your teaching. We’ll spend time looking at some of the newer capabilities in Quip: adding slides, polls, and ShareStream videos; the new Collaboration feature in Adobe’s Spark Page and Spark Video tools that finally allows student to co-create digital publications; and the ability to automatically create written transcripts within Zoom video recordings as well as conduct anonymous polls.
